Tec Review has won a gold medal in the Photography category of the 55th SPD Awards, which recognize the best editorial design in the world. It is the first Mexican magazine to receive an award from this society for three years running.
With the portfolio “Los seres que no vemos” (The Beings We Don’t See), the photographer Javier Rupérez exhibits close-up images of a group of insects, using a macrophotography technique.
This work was coordinated by Berenice Rodríguez and appears in the May-June issue.
International publications such as The New York Times Magazine, MIT Technology Review, WIRED, Smithsonian Magazine, The New Yorker, and Rolling Stone competed at this year’s Society of Publication Designers (SPD) awards.
This same year, the Tec de Monterrey magazine also won for the same piece of work at the 2020 CASE Platinum Awards in Latin America, in which it also won in the categories of Best Article and Best Practices in Digital Communication.
The magazine is a partnership between Grupo Expansión and Tecnológico de Monterrey.
Jesús Martín, Director of Institutional Marketing and Storytelling at Tec de Monterrey, mentions that this award makes him feel extremely proud of Mexican talent.
“Winning 3 years in a row is a sign of the Tec’s quality and commitment to raising the standards that this platform communicates with,” he said.
Ana Torres Moya, Content and National Publications Manager at the Tec, mentions that this achievement speaks volumes about the level of excellence that the institution always tries to impress on everything it does.
“It’s a great responsibility and an honor to be in the big leagues of editorial design for the third year running, alongside the most important brands in the world such as Wired, Times, and The New Yorker,” she said.
Iván Carrillo, General Editor of the magazine, stresses that SPDs are the “Oscar awards” for print media.
“The fact that we’ve won this gold medal again speaks of our work, quality and commitment. That’s Tec Review,” he said.
Berenice Rodríguez mentioned that this recognition is the result of teamwork and confirms the high quality that gives photographers the confidence to publish in Tec Review.
“Once again, the value of our commitment to using high-quality photographic material has been confirmed,” she said.
For Rodrigo Olmos, Art Editor of the magazine, the award recognizes the teamwork and great passion that is demonstrated every day.
“Tec Review is a publication that cares about delivering the best content to its readers with the help of internal and external collaborators; always attracting the best talent and looking for a unique way to display its content,” he added.
This year, the magazine was also nominated for the report Vacunas, preocupación mundial (Vaccinations, A Global Concern), published in the July-August 2019 issue, and for the portfolio Pinturas desde el cielo (Paintings From The Sky), which appeared in the July-August 2019 issue.
In 2019, the publication won a silver medal for the photographic portfolio, En Colima, Mexico. El Volcán de Fuego (In Colima, Mexico. The Fiery Volcano), by photographer Sergio Tapiro. In 2018, photographer Pedro Mera, won a gold medal for his story México está de pie (Mexico Stands).
