International evaluation firm Quacquarelli Symonds has ranked Tec de Monterrey in fourth place out of the top universities in Latin America in the QS Latin America University Rankings for 2023.
This year, the Tec was ranked alongside 428 universities from 20 countries, holding fourth place in the rankings. For the fourth year running, it is the number one university in Mexico out of 64 institutions ranked in the country.
The Tec earned a total score of 94.7 in these rankings and was ranked in second place among private universities in Latin America.
The first 3 places went to the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile; the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil; and the University of Chile.
Tec de Monterrey and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), which holds seventh place, are the only Mexican institutions in the Top 10 for these rankings.
QS sees the Tec as an academic point of reference in Latin America
Guillermo Torre Amione, Vice President of Research at Tec de Monterrey, said that occupying these national and regional positions in the rankings provides recognition for the efforts made by the Tec community.
“It motivates us to keep working according to the Strategic Plan for 2025, which encourages research as a source of innovative solutions and opportunities for our country’s economic, social, and environmental development,” said Torre Amione.
These rankings are some of those produced by renowned British firm QS Quacquarelli Symonds Limited, which evaluates the world’s top higher education institutions.
Published annually since 2011, the QS Latin America University Rankings highlight the top universities in Latin America and rank aspects related to the impact of education and faculty research, reputation, and quality.
The methodology is slightly different from that used for the QS World University Ranking (WUR), as it has been adapted to meet regional needs, with additional criteria for more in-depth comparison.
Metrics used by the rankings
The QS Latin America University Rankings are based on the following eight evaluation metrics:
- Employer Reputation
- Citations per Paper
- Academic Reputation
- Web Impact
- Student-Faculty Ratio
- Staff with PhDs
- Papers per Faculty
- International Research Network
The first three metrics are the strongest ones and where the institution scored best.
The Tec’s strengths
The Employer Reputation metric is where the Tec scored best, which reflects the excellent performance of its graduate community.
“We scored 100 on this metric, which represents 20% of the score, ranking us in seventh place. This information is obtained from the annual survey of employers performed by QS,” said Neil Hernández Gress, Director of Research at Tec de Monterrey.
Hernández Gress also said that the Tec is the number one university in Mexico on the Citations per Paper metric, increasing its number of citations by 37% compared with the previous year.
“Scopus publications from 2016-2020 and citations of these publications from 2016-2021 were considered for this metric,” added the Director of Research at Tec de Monterrey.
