Tec Review magazine is once again among the nominees for the best editorial design at the 57th Society of Publication Designers Awards (SPD Awards)
The magazine from Tec de Monterrey has obtained 5 consecutive nominations. This time, it’s a finalist in three categories.
“It’s an honor for us at Tec Review to have 5 nominations for the SPD Awards and to compete with world-renowned publications such as The New Yorker or Washington Post,” said Ana Torres, Content and Publications Manager at Tec de Monterrey.
The nominated publications could receive a gold or silver medal at the annual award ceremony that will take place in June 2022.

The Tec magazine’s nominations for the SPD Awards are in the Design, Photography, and Illustration categories.
The projects nominated by category are:
Design
The Dark Side of Artificial Intelligence, directed by Camila Ordorica, the publication’s art editor. In this piece, illustrator Eduardo Ramón Trejo focuses on exposing the problems of the modern era, examining fraud and fake images.
Photography
Berenice Rodríguez, photography editor, directed the three publications nominated in this category.
“What’s really important to be able to get to these nominations is that we’ve managed to earn the trust of photographers of this magnitude to publish with Tec Review,” Rodríguez highlighted.
The publications selected are Invisible Shapes, a gallery by photographer Roberto H. that presents a geometric vision through drones.
For his part, Jimmy Nelson captures diverse indigenous cultures in the Rekindle Pride portfolio.
Mexican photographer Cristina Mittermeier, , captures the bond between humans and other species in her work Similar Lives.
Illustration
Artificial Intelligence: The Science That is Changing Our Lives was also directed by Camila Ordorica. The story, developed by illustrator Guillermo Flores, shows superintelligence in different disciplines.

“This nomination is a major achievement because, for the first time, we’re participating on a par with magazines such as Variety, and other major editorial design magazines,” said Ordorica.
5 consecutive nominations
Tec Review is a publication from Tecnológico de Monterrey that specializes in innovation, research, and entrepreneurship.
It’s been nominated five times in a row and has won 4 times.
In 2021, it won gold and silver in the Photography category. The gold was in the Photojournalism/Story subcategory, for the Flight Pattern illustrations from Spaniard Xavier Bou.
The silver medal went to the photographic portfolio Look in the Arena of Fights, published in the September-October 2020 issue.
In 2020, Tec Review received a gold medal for the portfolio The Beings We Don’t See, in which the photographer Javier Rupérez shared close-up images of a group of insects, using macro photography.
In 2019, the publication won a silver medal for the photography portfolio In Colima, Mexico. The Volcano of Fire by photographer Sergio Tapiro, which was published in the 15th issue (January-February 2018).
A year earlier, in 2018, it won a gold medal for the story from photographer Pedro Mera called Mexico Is Still Standing, which was published in the 14th issue (November-December 2017).
Mission of the Society of Publication Designers
According to their official website, the mission of the Society of Publication Designers (SPD) is to create a network of creative professionals, strengthening the editorial design community.
With this, the awards seek to recognize and promote the best in editorial design, photography, and illustration.
The nominated projects are a compilation of the annual panorama of creative work on both print and digital platforms.
