Tec de Monterrey 67th in global sustainable development rankings

Tec de Monterrey has climbed 25 places to reach 67th place in the world in the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings.

These rankings evaluate the progress made by universities on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“Reaching this position in one of the world’s most prestigious rankings fills us with enthusiasm because it highlights the work done by the Tec community,” said Inés Sáenz, Vice President of Inclusion, Social Impact, and Sustainability.

“This inspires us to continue firing up outreach opportunities that promote social transformation and contribute to the sustainable development of our country,” she added.

The Tec's position in the rankings

In this year’s rankings, the Tec obtained a score of 90.7 out of 100.

The following SDGs are those in which the Tec is #1 in Latin America:

• SDG 1.- No Poverty (9th place in the world)
• SDG 17.- Partnerships for the Goals (18th place in the world)
• SDG 6.- Clean Water and Sanitation (26th place in the world)
• SDG 11.- Sustainable Cities and Communities (90th place in the world)

Tec de Monterrey has participated since 2019, which was the first time these rankings were published. This is the year in which it has been ranked the highest.

“At Tecnológico de Monterrey, we’re committed to generating transformative solutions that contribute to sustainable development and people’s wellbeing,” said Sáenz.

The institution participated in 16 of the 17 SDGs, with the only SDG it didn’t participate in being SDG 14 - Life Below Water.

As Tecnológico de Monterrey’s Vice President of Research Feniosky Peña-Mora remarked, “Research motivates our entire community, and our ambition is to continue conducting research that benefits society and the planet.”

The impact of Ruta Azul

Sáenz said that Ruta Azul, the Tec’s 2025 Sustainability and Climate Change Plan, has charted the course for achieving a sustainable future and becoming a model institution for sustainability.

“It has done so by adopting a proactive culture toward the climate emergency, which is reflected in the generation of ideas and technologies, in high-impact actions, and in training leaders who are committed to forging a sustainable future,” she said.

She mentioned that the Tec will present the third edition of its Report on Sustainable Development Initiatives this year, which includes 850 projects from the Tec de Monterrey, Tecmilenio, and TecSalud community that directly impacted the 17 SDGs from 2022 to 2023.

Method for evaluating universities

The methodology of the THE Impact Rankings uses carefully calibrated indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparisons across four broad areas: research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching.

Any university that provides data on SDG 17 and at least three other SDGs is included in the overall ranking.

Each SDG is classified individually according to the indicators measured.

A university’s total score in the rankings is calculated by combining its score in SDG 17 with its best three results on the remaining 16 SDGs.

2,152 universities from 125 countries participated in this year’s THE University Impact Rankings, 447 more than last year when 1,705 educational institutions took part.

Sustainable Development Goals

On September 25, 2015, world leaders adopted a set of global goals to eradicate poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda.

Each goal has specific objectives to be achieved within the following 15 years, which means by 2030.
