The Tec and the Delft University of Technology have agreed to work on transferring this Tec innovation, as well seeking new options for implementation.
Tec de Monterrey and the Delft Technological University have signed a collaboration agreement to exchange educational technology, talent, and academic content.
“We’re transferring the technological, pedagogical, and operational model of the Hologram Professor initiative,” said Carla Ramírez, leader of Educational Innovation and the Hologram Professor Initiative at the Tec.
The universities are developing a plan for the Dutch university to implement the Hologram Professor technology that has been developed and implemented by Tec de Monterrey.
Their goal is to use this model to teach the first intercontinental class between the Tec and Delft University through this system by next September.
The agreement also includes the development of research on topics such as educational innovation, joint publications, exchange of hologram professors, and, of course, classes delivered through this model.
Agreement on educational innovation
According to Leticia Castaño, who is also leader of Educational Innovation at the Tec, the main goal of the agreement is to share the Tec’s Hologram Professor experience with Delft so they can give and receive classes.
“The idea is an exchange of classes and knowledge, and also to conduct joint research,” added Patricia Aldape, Director of Learning Experience Innovation.
These academics explained that one part is transferring the technology that will be used to give and receive courses through this model, but another is the educational methodology, which the Tec will also provide support for.
The first part is already in motion, sharing the technology used by the Tec in this model and the technological requirements of the spaces used for this educational methodology.
Now, they will begin to work on the educational methodology with the support of those academics who are already part of the Hologram Professor group.
The Tec also aims to keep evolving the Hologram Professor technology, and approached Delft University because of its reputation in the area of technology.
Patricia Aldape highlighted that they are leaders in the areas of engineering, architecture, and aerospace. Delft is one of the largest universities in the Netherlands, ranking 57th according to the QS World University Rankings, standing out in the areas of engineering, architecture and technology.
When implementing the Hologram Professor classes, the Dutch institution and the Tec will look for subjects in which they can supplement each other’s knowledge and in which they are leaders.
“We have to look for subjects that can be matched up between the universities,” said Carla Ramirez.
They will start with the Schools of Architecture and Engineering, with the possibility of implementation at campuses that are already home to Hologram Professors and have rooms for receiving and broadcasting, such as:
- Monterrey
- Saltillo
- Tampico
- Laguna
- Chihuahua
- Mexico City
- State of Mexico
- Santa Fe
- Querétaro
- Guadalajara
Training will begin during the summer of 2022. The pilot test, which will be the first intercontinental class, is expected to be in September.

Hologram Professors since 2018
The Tec began to implement the Hologram Professor model in August 2018, with the aim of offering a closer experience for students compared with traditional video conferences.
It also aimed to have greater impact and reach because professors would otherwise have to travel to various campuses to teach their classes.
“It’s an experience that recreates the natural dynamics of a face-to-face class,” said Patricia Aldape, who highlighted that this is a further remote experience, providing digital hybrid education.
The results showed that students feel more motivated, arrive on time, and don’t feel that technology is a barrier, said Carla Ramírez.

The initiative also allows campuses to connect, which encourages interaction between students and class competitions with groups from different parts of the country.

Leticia Castaño added that the model is being used in both STEM classes and in business, finance, programming, and design classes.
“In our experience, any class can be taught using this type of format,” she concluded.
