Tec graduate designs “Spiderbot” for competition and wins 2nd place

With his Spiderbot design, Uriel Ruiz Delgadillo, a Mechatronics Engineering graduate from the Tec’s State of Mexico campus, won second place in the international design competition launched by Anycubic, one of the most popular 3D printer brands on the market.

The competition was held from July 10 to August 8, and was organized by the 3D printer and printing material brand Anycubic, which celebrated its fifth anniversary by sending out a call for entries so that its entire community or anyone interested could submit a proposed design for the creation of their new official mascot.

It could be either a 2D or 3D design and could be any type of character: a person, an animal, a plant, or an object.

What was the challenge? To represent the values and vision of the brand: freedom to create, innovation, technology, and 3D printing.

Uriel was a finalist in the competition and won second place. His was the only Mexican design on the podium.

The Tec graduate took into account everything that the brand represents, as well as analyzing how the brand wanted to be seen by others.

He wondered: “How can I make something that represents the freedom to create things, but which also looks technological?

“I started to come up with ideas; normally animals are very striking. So, I decided that my design should be an animal: a robot spider.

“Spiders are natural 3D printers. They create their own material and are able to shape it to their needs. A spider was the perfect choice,” he explained.

Uriel said that the biggest challenge for him was to make his design please other people, and also represent the brand.

“So, I started working on the design in 3D. I also wanted to have a 2D design, so my friend Sergio Heredia, a Tec graduate in Digital Animation, helped me and transferred my design into Photoshop.

“The response from my friends on social media was very good; they all told me that it was incredible, and that they liked it a lot,” he shared.

Thanks to the prize given by Anycubic, a 3D resin printer, Uriel will now be able to follow his dreams and achieve his goals.

“One of my goals is to start my own 3D design and printing workshop, working in different fields, so this contest has been my starting point. Thanks to the prize I won, I’ll be able to start this project.

“Another of my goals is to become a design engineer in one of the largest companies in the aerospace sector,” he said.

Right now, Uriel is working on the design of mechanical parts using 3D design software, as well as learning how to use other programs to design sculptures and figures in 3D.

Another of his hobbies is developing electronic devices as gadgets for personal use.
