Professor José Manuel Nieto and students Dionisio Othon and Oscar González from the School of Engineering and Sciences at Tec de Monterrey’s North Sonora campus will present a paper at the EDUCON22 international conference.

The paper they authored is entitled “Digital transformation for sustainable engineering education.

EDUCON is an international education and engineering conference organized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Profesor y estudiantes Tec investigan sobre la realidad virtual en la educación

Virtual Reality was their ticket to the international conference

The teacher and students began using virtual reality in engineering education.

Nieto explained that the result was an improvement in the learning process and students being able to acquire both practical and theoretical tools:

All the processes that need to be learned practically are taught online, which saves time, resources, and increases student safety.”

The NOVUS Fund for Educational Innovation provided the professor and students with the financial support necessary to carry out the research.

This fund provided equipment and allowed them to begin the virtual simulation of the on-campus tools they use.

Experimental groups were compared. Retention, quality of learning, and evaluations were higher in students who used virtual reality in their learning,” Nieto said.

Tools going beyond the classroom

The professor constantly encourages his students to participate and get involved in research projects that allow them develop and learn dynamically.

Nieto confirms that technological changes and virtual reality improve the teaching process at all educational levels:

Students have a well-rounded education when they are able to make use of new technologies in the learning process and undertake independent research.”

“Retention, quality of learning, and evaluations were higher in students who used virtual reality in their learning”

The teacher hopes that Dionisio and Óscar will be able to present the project at EDUCON22

This is an achievement shared with both the students and the engineering school. We wanted to demonstrate that this new tool can provide robust improvements in long-term learning.”

The 13th EDUCON22 conference will be held in the city of Tunisia, Africa, in March.
