At just eighteen years old, Tanna Sánchez has become a figurehead for women’s youth soccer in Mexico: she has worn the captain’s badge for the teams with age limits and is now ready to emigrate to the United States to join the Alabama Soccer team.
“It’s a great responsibility to represent Mexico, but the excitement you feel when you put on the shirt and play for the most beautiful country in the world is even greater. For me, the world stops when the national anthem starts playing,” the Mexican defender said.
The Mexican team made it to the U-20 Women’s World cup to be held in Costa Rica and Panama next August by dramatically defeating the national team of Haiti on penalties in the semi-finals of the Concacaf Championship.
Tanna is one of the main players in the team’s defense strategy and can’t hide her excitement about the possibility of representing the team again in a World Cup.
“The World Cup in August is another dream. Representing my team and putting Tec de Monterrey and my country on the map is something that really excites me.”
The girl from Puebla was the only member of the women’s team managed by Mónica Vergara that came from an educational institution in Mexico.
“It will always be my dream to lift up the World Cup and become a professional: I want to become a professional player in Europe and play a Champions League match”.
The Borregos Puebla defender saw action in the 90 minutes of each of the first six games of the qualifying matches leading up to the World Cup, until she had to leave due to an injury in extra time of the semifinal against Haiti.
With an award for runner up in the U-17 on her record, Tanna’s outstanding work out on the playing field has perfectly complemented her academic career and opened doors for her to study in the United States.
“Tec de Monterrey has given my football and academic career a great boost. Studying will always be essential for me, and the Tec has provided me with tools that have helped me overcome difficult situations.”
“It’s formed bonds that I will never forget. I’m eternally grateful to the institution for the support that I’ve received.”
Tanna still hasn’t decided which degree to study, although she is ready to start her adventure in the United States. As soon as she completes her studies at PrepaTec Puebla, she will head over to the University of Alabama through the Alabama Soccer team.
“It was always my goal to get a scholarship, but I never thought that soccer would take me to the United States and other places that I never thought I would get to visit. I’m very proud of this achievement.”
Women’s soccer in Mexico has opened up opportunities. The arrival of professionalism and the export of talent to the best leagues in the world is a clear example of its existing potential.
“I love seeing all the development that’s taking place. I like to think that my achievements on the Mexican team and at the Tec aren’t only for myself, but for future generations fighting for a common goal.”
The Mexican National Team lost the U-20 Championship finals by 4 goals to 1 against the United States, but the goal of reaching the World Cup was fulfilled and now a new dream begins for Mexico and Tanna.
“The United States couldn’t be defeated, but we’re ready for the World Cup and we’re going to work hard for it,” concluded the Puebla soccer player enthusiastically.
