The agreement between the Tec de Monterrey and the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) will promote postgraduate exchanges with Germany; participants to receive a full scholarship
The partnership between the Tec de Monterrey's Master's in Computational Sciences and the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) will enable postgraduates to do their doctorates in Germany.
The agreement also contemplates joint institutional research projects on information technology and artificial intelligence.
In turn, this will create more research internships for professors and the university will make arrangements for doctoral candidates to be granted these internships too.
The following are the most noteworthy aspects of the agreement signed by Manuel Zertuche, dean of the Tec's School of Engineering and Sciences (EIC), and by HPI director Christoph Meinel.
The HPI belongs to the University of Potsdam in Germany. It expects to welcome the first doctoral candidates in January, 2022.
Artificial intelligence and computer science
The agreement specifies the fields covered by the joint partnership between the Tec and the Hasso Plattner Institute, which include:
- Digital engineering for Industry 4.0 and digital transformation
- Digital engineering for agriculture, the environment, nature, and climate change
- Digital engineering for environmentally-aware cities and factories
- Digital medicine and personalized medicine
- Digital engineering for the automotive industry and advanced manufacturing
- Digital energy or digital technology to manage new forms of clean energy
- Artificial intelligence and entrepreneurship.
Also, ethical considerations in the implementation and impact of artificial intelligence, which is one of the areas of interest of the Tec de Monterrey's Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hub.
The HPI excels in research into digital engineering or computer science and artificial intelligence with a focus on innovation in IT systems and data engineering technologies.
Enrique Cortés, director of the Tec's IA Hub highlighted the fact that the HPI possesses over 10 research centers, each of which has its own specialty.
Cortés and Jürgen Döllner, his German counterpart, will set up their respective research committees and teams of participants in both organizations.
Postgraduate studies in Germany: a strategic alliance
Ricardo Swain, dean of EIC Western Region said that the relationship with HPI is strategic due to the interaction it enjoys with leading universities.
"The HPI is ground-breaking and its principal area of development is information technologies. The agreement will help us strengthen this field in the Tec and the Artificial Intelligence Hub," he added.
"It is an institute that has managed to set up close ties with the finest educational institutes in the world, including Stanford", he told us.
Enrique Cortés said, "the HPI is a highly prestigious institution in Europe. Its strength is its doctoral programs and scientific research".
"We want to vitalize our doctoral programs and scientific research, which makes this agreement a perfect fit for the Tec and for our students," he added.
Now the EIC will open registration to Tec graduates with a Master's in Computer Sciences.
Participants will receive a full scholarship.
They will also be given financial support to put towards their living expenses in Germany. Doctoral candidates will also be assigned postgraduate coordinators in both the Tec and the HPI.

Cortés said that making this agreement a reality is important to the Tec de Monterrey because fostering research is one of our university's priorities.

The HPI was born in Germany and wants to reach out into the world by forging ties with prestigious organisms or universities in different regions.
It has research centers called Hasso Plattner Research Schools in countries such as China, Israel, South Africa, and the United States.
This agreement contemplates a second phase involving a Hasso Plattner Research School on the Tec de Monterrey campus in Guadalajara.
Swain explained that the idea of establishing a Hasso Plattner school in Guadalajara is to have a regional impact and afford HPI its first base in Mexico in the Jalisco State capital.
Making this space a reality for HPI would open the doors to an incipient relationship with Mexico and Latin America and enable HPI to contribute to the AI development in this part of the world.
The HPI has research centers in:
- The University of Cape Town, South Africa.- Focused on the design of computer solutions and systems (algorithms) to achieve the UN's sustainable goals.
- Technion Haifa, Israel.- Computer sciences and electronic engineering
- Nanjing University, China.- Data analysis specialty
- The University of California Irvine, United States.- Data science and machine learning.
- The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, United States.- Digital health and health with AI.
