Tec de Monterrey has become the first private university in Mexico to sign the Higher Education Institution Declaration of Climate Emergency.
A total of 243 universities worldwide have signed this document.
The letter it signed was prepared by the Alliance for Sustainability Leadership in Education (EAUC), Second Nature, and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
“This signing is a concrete manifestation of the Tec doing its bit against climate change,” said Miguel Ruiz Cabañas, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Initiative Director at the Tec.
Emphasizing that this is a task for all of us, he mentioned that the struggle against climate change is the issue that defines this generation.
“It’s an effort to which all sectors of society are committed, but it’s up to universities to set an example,” he added.
The document was prepared for the Climate Action Summit held on September 23 at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
“It’s a collective manifestation of the commitment by all higher education institutions to follow these goals,” emphasized Ruíz.
The three-point plan, signed by the Tec and another 243 universities, consists of:
- A commitment to going carbon neutral by 2030 or 2050 at the very latest.
- Mobilizing more resources for action-oriented climate change research and skills creation.
- Increasing teaching and learning about environmental and sustainability education across curricula, campus and community outreach programs.
As regards the commitments made in the declaration, Ruiz Cabañas says that many of these goals have already been met at the Tec.
“We have several research projects for mitigating or adapting to climate change and many courses and teaching programs related to prevention aligned with the SDGs,” he said.
He mentioned that a specific plan would have to be drawn up by the relevant areas of the Tec and approved by its authorities to achieve the commitment of going carbon neutral by 2030 or 2050 at the latest.
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals were adopted in 2015 by United Nations (UN) member countries, together with the commitment to achieve them by 2030.
