The teacher and film critic Ernesto Diezmartínez has been invited to join the 2023 jury thanks to the organizers’ intention to diversify the jury for the Golden Globe Awards.
As a member of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI), the professor at Tec de Monterrey’s Sinaloa campus has been a juror at various international festivals such as Palm Springs, Havana, and Cartagena.
In September 2022, he received news that he would be one of four Mexicans who will form part of the team of 196 voters. The professor admits to feeling extremely excited about this.
“I’m delighted to take on the task of watching what has been released throughout the year and beginning to use my judgment to find the most outstanding movies,” said the professor.
A world-class award
The Golden Globes Awards have been given to the most outstanding film and television industry productions each year since 1944.
“The idea is that the Golden Globe association would have not only more people voting, but also greater versatility by including people from different countries and ensuring gender parity.” - Ernesto Diezmartínez.
What’s more, the professor said that the only people who were involved in voting in the past were members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).
The HFPA is a non-profit organization dedicated to communicating about the entertainment industry, as well as being responsible for organizing the Golden Globes.
“This event takes place in January every year and is managed by the HFPA, which is formed of 93 foreign members who live in Hollywood,” he explained.
Despite his long career as a critic, the professor shared that the Golden Globes represent an important new experience for him because of the prestige the award provides.
“I’m very happy to participate. It’s a new experience, especially since it’s a highly important media event,” he highlighted.
“The HFPA is currently trying to reinvent itself, as it has previously been pointed out for lack of plurality in terms of gender and race,” added the professor.
The search for greater diversity
According to Professor Diezmartinez, the HFPA saw the need to be open to other types of voters because of the moral progress being made in society, so it began to take action for the 2023 awards.
“This year, the association launched a call to all the members of FIPRESCI, inviting us to become voters regardless of whether we are members of the Golden Globes,” he explained.
The International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) is an association that provides a jury for film festivals and gives an award to the best film of the year.
Because the professor is a FIPRESCI member, he was given the chance to form part of the 103 members who were to be selected.
“The idea is that the Golden Globe association would have not only more people voting, but also greater versatility by including people from different countries and ensuring gender parity,” explained the critic.
As for the Golden Globes, there are still months to go. However, the professor is already receiving emails with lists of films which he will critique and review.
“I signed up for the film category. The nominations are going to take place in November. After that comes the vote in December, and then it all ends with the awards ceremony on January 10,” he shared.
The professor shared that the entire process is carried out remotely and virtually, with access to platforms on which to watch the films in advance.
Finally, Diezmartínez explained that the Golden Globes have a long and storied history, so he believes that the experience of evaluating films for the 2023 awards during the coming months will be both interesting and enriching.
