15 students from the Bachelor of Digital Art program at Tec de Monterrey’s Santa Fe campus are exhibiting a multimedia installation at the Cultural Institute of Mexico in Vienna, hosted by the Mexican Embassy in Austria, with the aim of reinterpreting works of Mexican surrealism.
The installation Artists in Dialogue displays pieces of animation, illustration, and multimedia experimentation that aim to bring to life works from the surrealist movement in Mexico, according to students and teachers responsible for their creation.
“I believe that at some point in our lives, artists have the goal of exhibiting somewhere and having our worksseen by more people. That dream has undoubtedly come true,” said Sofía Pedraza, a student at the School of Architecture, Art, and Design (EAAD) on the Tec’s Santa Fe campus.
The installation is part of the EAAD exhibition 100 Years of Surrealism: Mexico as Epicenter of the Avant Garde, which can be seen at the Cultural Institute of Mexico in Vienna from March 21 to May 2, 2025.

Tec student works inspired by Mexican surrealism
The works in the installation came about through researching, acknowledging, and exploring iconic works of Mexican surrealism, according to students and teachers at the Tec’s EAAD in Santa Fe.
“It took me about two weeks to complete my work, taking into account research on the artist and the original work, and then animating the final product.
“I think my biggest challenge was creating a reinterpretation to incorporate all the semiotic elements that encompass the meaning I wanted to convey through the work, while also capturing the essence of the original piece,” explains student Nuria Camacho.
These students reinterpreted works by artists Bridget Bate Tichenor, Francisco Toledo, Frida Kahlo,Guillermo Meza, Leonora Carrington, Octavio Ocampo, Remedios Varo, Sofía Bassi, and Wolfgang Paalen.
Finally, Camilo León, an EAAD professor at the Tec in Santa Fe, mentioned that: “It’s a very important achievement for the students to be able to exhibit their works internationally and participate in projects that enable them to strengthen their skills”.
