The architecture of the Borregos Stadium on the Monterrey campus, the design of which is configured to interact with its surroundings, has been presented with a 2020 Design Award from the Texas Society of Architects.
The Society recognized 19 outstanding projects by architects or offices from this U.S. state, which will be published in the September/October issue of the Society’s magazine.
Beck, whose headquarters are in Dallas, Texas, was the company in charge of the design and construction of the stadium.
The architects who designed the stadium, Rick del Monte and Tobias Newham, were inspired by what the institution seeks to transmit with initiatives such as DistritoTec: that spaces should be open to the community with a minimalist design.
“We’re really very proud of this international recognition for the design and architecture of the Borregos Stadium in Monterrey,” said Víctor Gutiérrez Aladro, Rector of Operations at the Tec.
“We’re very grateful to the Texas Society of Architects for this recognition that reaffirms the quality of design, architecture, functionality, and beauty of this iconic space in our city,” he added.
The design highlights the institution’s openness to society, preserving the historical architecture of its buildings and connecting with the community, said this director.
The stadium adapts to the needs of the Monterrey campus and has been built to international standards, said Mario Adrián Flores, Vice President of the Tec’s Northern Region.
“The Borregos were always at the heart of its design and construction. It reflects those who built it, supervised it, and the students and coaches who use it and bring it to life,” he said.
Its view of the Cerro de la Silla and the view of the stadium from Fernando García Roel Avenue are other highlights of the stadium’s design.
Construction of the stadium took two and a half years and consisted of four phases. It was inaugurated on April 30, 2019.
With an investment of 30 million dollars it was built in what is called a complete life cycle,i.e. design, construction and operation of the buildings have to be efficient.
“We’re very proud to see Tec values, such as collaboration, reflected in our work,” said José Luis Graue, Director of Construction in the Tec’s Northern Region
“This recognition represents the Tec’s vision and its commitment to health and to sport for the students obviously, but also for its commitment to existing in harmony with its neighbors and the surrounding environment,” he added.
An important point to notice is how the stadium has been designed to be open to the community, said José Antonio Torre, Director of Urban Planning and Sustainability and head of DistritoTec.
“It’s always very satisfying to receive recognition for work that has so much meaning for the Tec and for DistritoTec. It’s a truly urban university stadium, which offers services to the university and the area in which it is located,” he said.
For Beck, being part of the construction of the Borregos Stadium was a watershed for the company.
“As Beck’s first integrated project in Mexico, its construction is an example of the success of our integrated system. We’re grateful to Tec de Monterrey for placing their trust in new models and sharing our vision,” said the company in a press release.
The Borregos Stadium is home to Monterrey’s men’s and women’s American football and soccer teams and various student events have been held there, both for Art and Culture and Leadership and Experience.
The stadium was inaugurated on April 30, 2019.
