The Tec’s Monterrey Innovation District has received the Trailblazer Award, presented by the Global Institute of Innovation Districts, as a result of implementing a unique value proposition based on its strengths in research and development.
This took place during the Global Summit Awards, an event that recognizes the work of the communities who generate these innovation ecosystems.
“It’s a great honor to receive this award because it represents the work of a great team of people who began this with distritotec ten years ago. This award recognizes Tec de Monterrey on an international level.
“In addition to highlighting how Mexico is a place where extraordinary things happen, this award represents the entire community that made it possible,” said Mario Adrián Flores, Vice President of the Monterrey Region and Director of the Monterrey Campus.

The Monterrey Innovation District is a Tec project that aims to bring together academia, institutions, and industry.
It also aims to generate solutions that will transform the reality of communities both in Mexico and around the world.
“Innovation districts need greater recognition and understanding.” – Julie Wagner
Nuevo León Governor Samuel García also attended the awards ceremony, held on April 10 during the Global Summit on Innovation Districts.
Recognizing community work
Julie Wagner, President of the Global Institute on Innovation Districts, said the Global Summit Awards are a way of recognizing the work of communities operating within these ecosystems.
“Innovation districts need greater recognition and understanding, particularly of the people who implement these practices with passion, persistence, and rigor,” she said.
The Global Summit Awards consist of three main awards:
- Trailblazer Award: Given to an early or emerging district that is charting new, groundbreaking pathways important to the advancement of innovation districts.
- Lighthouse Award: Given to a mature or more established innovation district that has uniquely, and distinctively, developed over time, offering powerful insights and inspiration for others.
- District Champion: Recognition awarded to an individual demonstrating extraordinary leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment in advancing an innovation district.
Tec advances with emerging district
Recognized as an emerging district, the Monterrey Innovation District currently has two global partners: Venture Café and Science Gallery, as well as participation from municipal and state authorities and other institutions.
“We have a master plan that guarantees a mixed ecosystem, combining industry, academia, housing, and public spaces which drive innovation. One example of this is the EXPEDITION FEMSA building.
“It’s a source of pride for the entire Tec community to have created it, including its 32 laboratories and the complexity involved in having an interdisciplinary building in which to solve education, obesity, and sustainability problems,” shared Edgar Muñiz, Director of Strategic Innovation Projects.
Projects recognized at this ceremony will receive a tree planted in their district as a symbolic representation of the development and growth of the Innovation District itself.
