Five students will announce their arrival in Singapore to represent their country at the FIRST Global Challenge 2023 robotics competition by raising the Mexican flag as if they were Olympic athletes.

From October 7 to October 10, Flora Sedas, Gustavo Ramos, Romina Castro, Patricio Gutiérrez, and Diego Villanueva from PrepaTec Eugenio Garza Sada will compete in the event alongside young people from over 190 countries.

These youngsters, who also belong to the Botbusters 4635 robotics group, qualified for this international contest by winning the FIRST Global Mexico 2023 competition held last June.

“The fact that we all know each other helps our team go the extra mile. This is a learning opportunity, and an opportunity to grow as a person and student,” commented Flora Sedas, who is in her 3rd semester.

The FIRST Global Challenge 2023 will focus on the role of hydrogen as a source of renewable energy in the future and the reduction of global carbon emissions.

“We’re going to give it our all for the glory of the PrepaTec and Mexico,” said Lorena López Portillo, the Botbusters’ head coach.

The participation of Tecnológico de Monterrey’s PrepaTec marks the first time Mexico has been represented in a FIRST Global.

FIRST Global is a non-profit public charity that seeks to inspire leadership and innovation in young people all over the world by empowering them with education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Shining in competitions

This year, Botbusters 4635 has won three regional FIRST Robotics Competitions and FIRST Global Mexico 2023 as well as being invited to take part in the Indiana Robotics Invitational.

At the Indiana event, which was held at Lafayette Jeff High School in the United States, the students were invited to compete against 70 teams from different countries.

“The best teams in the world are invited. On this occasion, Botbusters was the only team invited from Latin America. It was an honor,” commented Francisco Guerra, PrepaTec’s national robotics leader.

For Botbusters’ head coach Lorena López Portillo, competing at the Indiana Robotics Invitational was an opportunity to showcase her students’ talent.

“Being the only Latin American team invited has enabled many people to appreciate our potential and see the wonderful team we have formed,” commented the head coach.

Botbusters 4635, this time representing Mexico, is now ready for its next competition at the FIRST Global Challenge 2023, to be held on October 7 to October 10 this year.

“Every event involves a particular challenge and affords a different learning experience as you take on the best of the best. You learn from your mistakes and winning feels good,” said Patricio Gutiérrez.
