The institution climbed one place from last year in Latin America, moving up from fifth to fourth place.

These rankings were presented during the Times Higher Education Latin America Universities Summit 2023, with the Tec’s Monterrey campus being the venue for the first time the event was held in Mexico.

Although these rankings use the same 13 performance indicators calibrated for use in the THE World University Rankings, the weightings are recalibrated to reflect the characteristics of Latin America.

These performance indicators are grouped into five areas:

  • Teaching
  • Research
  • Citations
  • International Outlook
  • Industry Income

In this year’s results, Mexico has Tec de Monterrey in the top 10 for Latin America, three in the top 50, and nine in the top 100. Last year, Mexico had ten universities in the top 100.

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is the second highest-scoring university in the country, holding 15th place and climbing one place from last year.

The third-highest scoring is the Metropolitan Autonomous University in 31st place, going down one place from last year.

Tec the venue for THE LATAM Universities Summit

On July 3 and 4, Tec de Monterrey was the venue for the Times Higher Education Latin America Universities Summit 2023, which had been chosen to be held in Mexico for the first time by Times Higher Education.

The results of the Times Higher Education Latin America University Rankings 2023 were exclusively revealed during the event.

Monterrey campus received more than 230 attendees from 17 countries at the event, held in person for the first time in four years.

David Garza, Rector and Executive President of the Tec, performed the official opening of the event accompanied by the Secretary of Education for Nuevo León, Sofialeticia Morales, and David Watkins, Director of Data Science at Times Higher Education.

“It makes me proud that Tec de Monterrey is the venue for this event, to mark our 80th anniversary. Over this time, our institution has sought to encourage and enhance research as the engine of change to contribute to the educational, social, and environmental development of Mexico and the world.

“Platforms such as the Times Higher Education Latin America Universities Summit 2023 allow the institution to continue opening channels for international communication and collaboration that enable the achievement of viable solutions to these issues.”

The rector of the Tec said that as the event focuses on Latin America, a region with strengths and challenges, the current context should be taken into account when building the future.

“For this institution, climbing places is also a source of satisfaction, which motivates us to continue developing research and promoting good educational practices to shape agents of change who benefit society,” added Garza Salazar.

Garza said that universities play an important role in these challenges and opportunities, and that these types of events are an opportunity to discuss collaborations on how educational institutions are driving social progress.

“We’ll be working on topics related to funding for research, collaboration, work between industry and academia, and student mobility.

“I hope we can capitalize on these discussions and can reflect on new perspectives for finding opportunities over these days.”

Also attending were Guillermo Torre, Vice President of Research at Tec de Monterrey; José A. Cheyne, Rector of Del Rosario University; and Victoria Galan-Muros, Chief of Research and Analysis at the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education, to name but a few.

In his speech, David Watkins addressed the audience to thank them for their participation: “It’s a real pleasure to welcome you to the THE LATAM Universities Summit here at Tec de Monterrey; it’s an honor for me and all the team at Times Higher Education to organize these events. Thank you very much for being here.”
