Mathematical route leads to MIT admission and scholarship

Diego Caballero, a student from the Multicultural PrepaTec campus in Mexico City, has been admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and given a scholarship. According to QS Top Universities, MIT is considered the best university in the world.

Thanks to his SAT scores and outstanding academic record, Diego received a 75% scholarship, which goes toward the cost of tuition, housing, food, and books for the duration of his degree.

This university in the United States usually only admits between 1 and 5 Mexicans per year. Every year, thousands of students apply for admission and only those who manage to obtain a SAT score above 1,500 are accepted by MIT.

“I was one of the two Mexicans that MIT admitted this year; it’s an honor and I know that I must work hard to show what the Tec and my country are capable of producing.

“What’s more, I got 1,590 points out of the 1,600 in the SAT standardized test, which means that I was in the top 0.1% of those taking the test,” said Diego.

Diego Caballero chose to study Mathematics and Computing at MIT because it’s considered one of the best in the world for mathematical sciences.

“I chose MIT because students work in a collaborative environment and because it’s the best university in the area I want to study, which will give me greater opportunities,” said the student.

Love and passion for mathematics

Diego discovered his love for mathematics at a young age. He has participated in many national and international competitions since elementary school, as well as Math Olympiads.

“The Olympiads taught me to not be scared of facing problems, to be persistent, and to dedicate myself to my studies,” Diego explained.

The student won 3 medals in the Mexican Mathematical Olympiad, which is the most prestigious high school contest in the country. Diego received 2 silver medals in 2020 and 2021, respectively, and a gold in 2022.

He also won first place in the mathematics category of the Tec’s International Science Contest for two consecutive years, in 2022 and 2023.

Diego was able to attend a summer class at Yale University during the fourth semester of his studies at Multicultural PrepaTec, which confirmed his choice of degree and interest in studying abroad.

About the MIT application process

The MIT selection and admission process is highly individualized and assesses applicants holistically, considering many aspects of their academic and personal profiles.

MIT seeks students with strong academic abilities, leadership skills, a passion for learning, and the potential to contribute to the Institute’s community.

In order to meet the requirements, the student from Mexico City campus (CCM) had to submit an application and take a standardized test, write essays, provide letters of recommendation, and participate in an interview.

Diego thanked his teachers, classmates, and family members for everything that he has achieved so far.

“My greatest inspiration has always been my parents; they have worked their whole lives so that I can receive the best possible education.

“I’ll be able to take everything I’ve learned from the Multicultural program with me and that’ll be useful in a student community as diverse as the one at MIT,” concluded Diego.
