Jorge Membrillo Hernández, a research professor at the Mexico City campus School of Engineering and Sciences who is also part of the Institute for the Future of Education, was the main speaker presenting the Tec 21 Model at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands.

This seminar was attended by more than 200 professors from the areas of engineering, business, and social sciences who want to implement challenge-based educational models similar to that used by the Tec.

The main topics discussed were how teachers adapt to a new education model, the new skills students develop, and assessment strategies.

Tec de Monterrey is a world leader in educational innovation and challenge-based learning publications, with around 100 contributions in the SCOPUS database,” said Membrillo.

Constant evolution

What has caught the attention of universities such as Eindhoven in the Netherlands, the Hamburg University of Technology in Germany, and Dublin in Ireland is that the Tec’s educational innovation has been in constant evolution.

“The learning model where the teacher is in control, even of responses, is fine. But now, the challenge is to design something with your colleagues that tests you as a professor too.

“We’re good at Tec but we always want to be better, which is why we have spent more than six years seeking to develop our Tec 21 Model”, he concluded.

Use of education as a social tool

This model provides opportunities for students to see problems from more than one perspective, to find interdisciplinary solutions to challenges, and to participate in experiential learning.

“Education and society go hand-in-hand: many advances in education determine societal change.

“The human resources being developed will be highly competitive and, most importantly, will create a more conscious society,” says the professor.

Educational change caused by the pandemic

The pandemic accelerated the process of change in some areas of education. According to the professor, the competencies required by companies today need digital skills.

Experiential learning allows students to develop skills that will make them stand out at work,” he concluded.
