Tec #1 in Mexico and #5 in Latam in Times Higher Education rankings

Tec de Monterrey holds its place as the number 1 university in Mexico and among the top 5 in Latin America in the Times Higher Education (THE) regional rankings.

The Tec is ranked 5th in Latin America, after universities in Chile and Brazil, in the most recent edition of the Times Higher Education Latin America University Rankings 2022.

This is the fifth consecutive year that the list has ranked the Tec in the top 5 universities in the region.

In Mexico, the Tec remained in first place among the 26 Mexican universities evaluated, which was 3 more than last year.

“Being in this position in Latin America reflects the impact of the research done at the Tec, inspired by the 2025 plan, and is key to development in Mexico and the region,” said Neil Hernández, Associate Vice Rector for Research at the Tec.

The Tec has been ranked among the top 5 universities in the region by this list since 2018.

The Tec has been the number 1 university in Mexico since the ranking was first published in 2016. (Rankings within Latin America are shown in parentheses).

The Tec’s strengths

The Latin American rankings, produced by the THE evaluation firm, bring together global performance statistics to evaluate research-intensive universities.

In total, 197 universities were evaluated this year, 20 more than last year, in 13 Latin American countries.

The overall score obtained by the Tec was 84.8 out of 100, thus improving on last year’s score by 1.5 points.

The indicators used are grouped into 5 evaluated areas. Compared to last year, the Tec has improved in Citations, Research, and Industry Income.

The Tec obtained the highest scores in Research and Industry Income.

• Teaching (the learning environment): 36%.
  The Tec received 74.3 points.
• Research (volume, income, and reputation): 34%.
  The Tec improved its score to 92.8 points.
• Citations (research influence): 20%.
  The Tec improved its score to 86.8 points.
• International outlook (staff, students, and research): 7.5%.
  The Tec received 88.5 points.
• Industry Income (knowledge transfer): 2.5%
  Tec improved its score to 99.8 points.

The rankings

The goal of these rankings is to provide a better-informed vision of Latin American universities that helps to trigger a focus on improvement and collaboration to improve the quality of education across the region.

It’s similar to the global rankings of universities, the THE World University Rankings, using the same indicators, criteria, and rigor, but with weightings that reflect the characteristics of Latin American universities.

There were 25 new universities that were not ranked in 2021, and 19 of those were participating in the rankings for the first time.

Times Higher Education (THE) is a London-based evaluation firm reporting on news and issues related to higher education.

It publishes the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings, Asia University Rankings, World Reputation Rankings, Global Employability Rankings, 150 under 50 Rankings, and the Latin America Rankings.
