Artists who shine! Highlights of Tec’s Festival of Arts & Culture

VibrArt 2022, Tec de Monterrey’s national art and culture festival, which served as a talent showcase for 1,200 students, has come to an end.

From May 17 to 21, this festival had activities in eight events in various artistic disciplines such as: film, literature, dance, and visual arts, as well as musical composition and interpretation, four of them in person.

“Art and culture at the Tec are something that keeps us alive and attentive, with drive. I believe the process of young people’s development means also giving them these abilities of expression and leadership,” said Víctor Gutiérrez, Rector of Tec Operations.

This year, VibrArt stood out for being a festival with competitions and awards at different Tec campuses, such as those in Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla, Querétaro, and Mexico City.

 

 

 

Making audiences vibrate with their melodies

The song “Alguien que te tuvo” (Someone Who Had You) from the León campus won first place and Best Music at the Song Festival.

“¿Cómo le haces?” (How Do You Do It?), a song from the Chihuahua campus, won second place, along with Best Lyrics and Best Musical Performance.

This event, held on May 21 at the Guadalajara campus, marked the closing of the VibrArt festival, which promotes art and culture at the Tec.

 

 

Choreographies from Monterrey and Guadalajara dominating the dance festival

With their original choreographies, students from the Tec’s Monterrey and Guadalajara campuses took the top spot on the podium in the two categories of Tec Dance, the VibrArt 2022 dance competition.

Students from the Monterrey campus took first place in Modern Dance with the piece Somewhere Only We Know. PrepaTec Monterrey also took second and third places in that category.

A team from the Guadalajara campus won first place in Urban Dance with the piece Saturday Night. Second and third places went to the Chihuahua and Ciudad Obregón campuses, respectively.

In this final of the Tec’s dance festival, nearly 100 students competed on the stage set up in the Sports Dome on the Guadalajara campus, which was the venue for the event.
 

 

 

Showing their artistic side and competing through TikTok

In its second year, the Tec Talent artistic skills competition invited students to participate through the TikTok social network.

This virtual competition enabled Tec students to show off very unique skills such as impersonation, acrobatics, makeup, lip-sync, and even instrument playing.

The students who stood out were Edgar Medina from PrepaTec Irapuato, performing the song “Cortometraje de amor” (A Love Short); and Bernardo Preciado from PrepaTec State of Mexico with his violin performance.

In addition, Mariana Ruíz from the State of Mexico campus demonstrated her skills with two hula hoops; Leobardo Preciado from PrepaTec State of Mexico played the marimba; and Regina Romero from the State of Mexico campus showed off her talent with makeup.

 

Home victory in film talent

The Tec Film Festival, which this year was held at Cineteca Rosario Solano in Querétaro, had students from the Querétaro campus win in their three categories.

They took the prize in the film competition’s following three categories: Documentary, Animation, and Fiction.

Alejandro Carrizales managed to explore an intimate and melancholic memory with “Afterlife,” the winning documentary piece he directed and produced in which he reflects on his family’s story after the death of two of his loved ones.

Students Romina Díaz and Clara Cobo directed the animated short film “Fuego” (Fire), which won first place in the Animation category and deals with the life of a pregnant woman from an indigenous community who seeks to free herself from an abusive relationship.

The film “Las grietas de mi casa” (The Cracks in My House), directed by Donají Márquez and produced by Nuria González, was chosen as best fiction short film. The film deals with the feeling of living in a house in complete solitude.

The 20 short films that made up the official selection of the fourth annual Tec Film Festival will be available for free on IMCINE’s FILMIN LATINO platform from May 19 to 29.

 

 

 

Literary talent awarded at the Tec’s longest running artistic gala

This year marked the 36th year the Tec’s Literary Creation Competition was held as part of VibrArt 2022, in which awards were given in the categories of short story, long story, playwriting, and poetry.

The Literary Gala was held in the lobby of the Mexico City campus Library. This year, it received 61 nominations in the various categories.

The works and authors chosen as this year’s top winners in the different categories were:

• High school short story: “Muelle” (Dock) by Aldo García from PrepaTec Metepec.
• College and graduate school short story: “Caracoles azules” (Blue Snails) by Inés Sroczyñski from the Querétaro campus.
• High school long story: “Los eternos Goetia” (The Eternal Goetias) by Emma Córdova from PrepaTec Eugenio Garza Sada.
• College and graduate school long story: “Nachito” (Little Nacho) by Diana Velázquez from the Querétaro campus.
• High School Playwriting: “Un fantasma en la casa” (A Ghost in the House) by Marisol Manzanares from PrepaTec Santa Fe.
• College and graduate school playwriting: “Las pérdidas del puerto 33” (Losses from Port 33) by José Flores from the Sinaloa campus.
• High school poetry: “Delirios de noche y enfermedad” (Nighttime Delusions and Sickness) by Carlos Molina from PrepaTec Metepec.
• College and graduate school poetry: “La desnudez final” (The Final Nudity) by Mateo Febres from the Guadalajara campus.

 

 

 

Women with theatrical talent excelling in Monologue finals

The Monologue Festival, which took place on May 20 at the Tec Guadalajara campus, had a significant number of women among the talent that made it to the final phase of this competition.

There were 15 finalist monologues, 14 of which were performed by actresses. Female participation was also noticeable in the teams, where the majority were women demonstrating their talent in various roles such as directors, writers, crew, and producers.

“A contest like this monologue competition allows young people to express themselves in an important way through various topics and lets them see how art can serve to communicate and how it can be experienced intensely,” said Gutiérrez, Rector of Tec Operations.

The winning teams in this competition were: 

First place: “Se me va!” (It Escapes Me!) from the Guadalajara campus

Second Place: “Cita múltiple” (Multiple Appointments) from PrepaTec Obregón

Third Place: “Llegarán” (They Will Come) from the Mexico City campus

 

 

 

Nearly 200 works competing in the Visual Arts Competition

During VibrArt 2022, the Tec’s second annual Visual Arts Competition received a total of 198 entries.

The participating works were created by students from all levels of the Tec using different techniques such as video, drawing, painting, digital art, and photography.

First, second, and third places were awarded in two categories: two-dimensional art and three-dimensional art.

The top winners of the competition were:

• Two-dimensional category: “Velador” (Night Watchman) by Joaquín Arce from the Sinaloa campus, who presented a digital photograph, which also received a special mention for Innovation in visual language.
• Three-dimensional category: “Dicotomía en segundos” (Dichotomy in Seconds) by students Alejandra Sofia Azamar Guerrero, Gala María Canedo Ibarra, Montserrat de María Cuéllar Ortega, Paola Danae López Pérez, and Esmeralda Herrera Sánchez from the State of Mexico campus. 

The award ceremony was broadcast from the Tec Puebla campus’s Interactive Urban Museum (MUI).

Five honored for inspiring others to experience art

Five Tec students were recognized with the Talent That Inspires award for their outstanding artistic trajectory and for inspiring their communities to promote art.

The winners of this year’s award that recognizes artists and cultural promoters are:

Estefanny Itcel Ortega, a student on the Digital Art degree program at the State of Mexico campus, was awarded for her career in graphic design.

Luis Eduardo Landeros, a Computer Systems Engineering degree student at Tec CEM, is a pianist, composer, and orchestra conductor.

Magaly Bustamante, known as Magy, holds a degree in Digital Art from the State of Mexico campus and has won several awards for her talent in drawing and 2D animation.

María Laura Miranda, singer-songwriter, actress, filmmaker, and cultural promoter is a Marketing and Communications student at the Tec’s North Sonora and Querétaro campuses.

Valeria Gómez, a Digital Art student, has accumulated 47 awards and recognitions in her life, such as the First Recognition for Talented Art and Culture, and two awards for academic excellence.

In-person reconnection of artists with their audiences

Last year’s VibrArt was carried out entirely in virtual format due to the COVID-19 pandemic contingency. This year, the Tec festival was able to promote art and culture with in-person events.

At least four of the eight VibrArt 2022 competitions and awards were held with artists performing in front of an audience.

Such was the case with the Song Festival and the Tec Dance festival, which were held in the Sports Dome on the Guadalajara campus and were attended by up to 800 people.

“It’s been a spectacular thing to relive and experience something that we’d lost during the two years of the pandemic. You get hooked, excited, and inspired by the kids’ talent,” said Luis Raúl Domínguez, Dean of Student Leadership and Education at the Tec.

Other on-site events were the Monologue Festival, also on the Guadalajara campus, and the Talent that Inspires awards ceremony on the Monterrey campus.
