Tec Review has won gold and silver medals in the Photography category at the 56th SPD Awards from the Society of Publication Designers.

Tec Review is the first Mexican magazine to be nominated for, and to have won, awards on four consecutive occasions between 2018 and 2021.

The awards are widely considered the “Oscars” of editorial design.

This year’s nominations were in the Photography and Design categories for publications directed by Berenice Rodríguez, photography coordinator, and Manelik Guzmán, creative director.

Publications such as The New York Times Magazine, the MIT Technology Review, and The New Yorker were among many others which also participated in the competition.

Gold and Silver at the SPD Awards

This year, the Society of Publication Designers recognized two Tec Review publications in the Photography category.

In the Photojournalism/Story subcategory, pictures by the Spaniard Xavier Bou, entitled ‘Flight Pattern, won the gold medal.

The photo gallery, published in July 2020, shows photographs from Spaniard Xavier Bou of bird flight paths.

The silver medal went to the photographic portfolio ‘Look in the Arena of Fights’, published in the September-October 2020 issue.

The images show the world of wrestling and its contrasts through the lens of photographer Lourdes Grobet.

Tec Review achievements

Tec Review is a publication from Tecnológico de Monterrey focusing on innovation, research, and entrepreneurship.

Produced by Tec de Monterrey in collaboration with Grupo Expansión, it has won five SPD medals in four years.

Jesús Martín, Director of Institutional Marketing and Storytelling at Tec de Monterrey, highlighted Tec Review’s winning streak in the past four SPD Awards.

“For four years running, we’ve won this world-renowned award. This increases our responsibility to continue publishing high quality content and enhancing the user experience through graphic content,” he said.

“At Tec Review, we don’t measure success by winning, but rather by making an honest, transparent, and professional effort. That’s our great achievement, shared Martín.

Like CONECTA, Tec Review forms part of TEC MEDIA, which is coordinated by Ana Torres Moya, who highlights the magazine’s work and determination.

The most difficult thing isn’t winning, but rather continuing to do so. The team’s perseverance, effort, and talent have made this Tec de Monterrey project one of the best publications in the world since 2018,” said Torres.

International recognition

In addition to the above awards, the magazine has been given prizes by the CASE Awards and the Society for News Design (SND).

In 2020, Tec Review received a gold medal for the portfolio ‘The Beings We Don’t See‘, in which the photographer Javier Rupérez shared close-up images of a group of insects, using macro photography.

In 2019, the publication won a silver medal for the photography portfolio ‘In Colima, Mexico: The Fiery Volcano’, by photographer Sergio Tapiro, which was published in the 15th issue (January-February 2018), also coordinated by Berenice Rodríguez.

A year earlier, in 2018, the magazine won a gold medal for its story ‘Mexico Is Still Standing‘, by photographer Pedro Mera, published in the 14th issue (November-December 2017).

In total, Tec Review has received 12 international awards.

“We’ve won medals year after year at awards ceremonies that celebrate the best of innovation and design in the world of publishing. No other Mexican publication has that record. We’re very happy!” shared Torres.
